The final portion of the Tumbling Creek Section of the Highlands to Islands Trail, located near the University of North Georgia’s campus in Oakwood, will be unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, July 13 at 11 a.m.

A portion of the new trail, which includes a wooden boardwalk and tree-lined trails, opened to the public in February and extended the existing path an additional quarter-mile from the pedestrian tunnel under Atlanta Highway to the pedestrian bridge near UNG.

The final piece of the Tumbling Creek Trail project has added another 0.35 miles, for a total of 0.6 miles of additional trail space.

“This Highlands to Islands trail system continues to serve as a vital source of recreation and connectivity for the benefit of Hall County residents and visitors,” Hall County District 2 Commissioner Billy Powell, in whose district the new trail section sits, said. “We are excited to be able to provide such a beautiful amenity to our citizens and provide folks with alternate ways of travel around Hall County.”

Free parking for the ribbon cutting ceremony will be available inside the parking lot of the University of North Georgia’s Health Sciences Building at 2990 Landrum Education Drive Oakwood, Georgia 30566.

UNG officials will provide a golf cart shuttle service to transport guests to and from the ribbon cutting ceremony location; However, guests may also follow directional signage that will be placed alongside the trail for a short, five-minute walk to the ceremony.
